The Khasi Students Union South West Khasi Hills District has extended its support to the demand made by various NGOs including the demand made by the MLA of Mawsynram Constituency for the immediate upgradation of Mawsynram Community and Rural Development Block into a Civil Sub Division which is an aspiration of the rural populace and as the demand for Mawsynram civil sub division has been delayed for the past 20 years, the Union is following closely on the demand until its fulfilment for the genuine interest of the people living in 164 villages of Mawsynram Community and Rural Development. 

The Khasi Students' Union has pressed convincing evidences of the genuineness of such demand from the year 1962 which marks the implementation of Mawsynram Community and Rural Development Block in the state which is also one of the oldest C&RD Block in Meghalaya turning 59 years this year.

In addition, the detailed mapping of the configuration of a region. the land forms or topography of Mawsynram Community and Rural Development Block justify the reiteration demand to upgrade into a full fledged Civil Sub Division. Mawsynram Community and Rural Development which comprises of 164 villages with the total population of 54,109 ( Census 2011), the distance of the border areas to the district headquarter in Shillong and the poor connectivity in terms of road and communication are the key factors causing hindrances to reach out development and “therefore justifies the fact that administration has to be brought closer to the people”, the letter added. 

Moreover, Mawsynram CRD Block covers the area of 510km² and the distance from the District Headquarter (Shillong) to Mawsynram is 56 kms and can reach more than 80kms to villages bordering with Bangladesh.

According to the KSU South West Khasi Hills President, civil sub-division is the only realistic way of bringing the administration closer to the people and as the present Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government under the leadership of Conrad K Sangma has stated that it is a people’s government hence, we strongly convey our message to the State government to listen to the demands made by the residents of Mawsynram by not putting up any conditions because the region is equipped with various government offices and other criteria which is needed to be upgraded into a civil sub division.
